Yield gap analysis for sustainable potato production

The aim of the project is to analyse potential and actual potato yields and yield gaps at field and farm level across the Netherlands. Insight will be summarized and integrated into a decision-support system (DSS) that benchmarks potato yields and provides insight in the causes of yield gaps at individual field level while accounting for farm specific conditions.

Three main steps will be followed:

1) improvement of potato growth models to assess yield and quality.
2) field and farm monitoring and analysis of actual yields, quality, resource use efficiency and environmental impacts.
3) development of a DSS. Field experiments and on-farm potato crop investigation is part of the research, for calibration and validation of crop models and to investigate the main agronomic factors influencing yield. The DSS will allow farmers to benchmark the performance of their fields. Results contribute to increases in yield, quality and stability of potato production and to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the Netherlands.
